Maori immersion teacher additional $1000 allowance

Eligibility

The Maori Immersion Teacher Additional $1000 Allowance is an allowance for primary or area teachers who:

  • are required to use Te Reo Maori in approved Maori immersion programmes at Maori immersion level 1
  • have continuously taught students at Maori immersion level 1 for the equivalent of five years.

The allowance is effective from:

  • 28/01/2011 for primary teacher
  • 28/01/2012 for area teachers

Continuous Service

The 5 years service must be current continuous service.

A break in service is considered to be any unapproved leave for a period of greater than one month.

Approved leave is treated as a pause and service will continue to accrue once the teacher resumes teaching responsibilities.

Part time teaching at Maori immersion level 1 is counted towards the five years continuous service. However it is calculated at the equivalent amount of full time service. (e.g. Two years working at 0.5 FTTE is equivalent to one year full time service.)

For any period of time that the Ministry does not have a record of what Maori immersion level the teacher was teaching at, we require classroom rolls. These rolls must include the student year levels. These rolls are used to confirm the Maori immersion levels.
