Statement of service

A statement of service is a written record of a teacher's employment service.

There are two different statements of service we refer to in the education sector. These are:

1. a statement of service from a pay centre
2. a statement of service from a previous employer.

Statement of service from a pay centre

A statement of service from a pay centre is a record of the work the teacher has done in New Zealand state schools.

Teachers usually apply for a statement of service from their pay centre before they leave New Zealand to teach overseas. The two choices they have are:

1. a free, basic statement of service
2. a full statement of service.

Statement of service from a previous employer

A statement of service from a previous employer is a record of the work the teacher has done in that role.

A previous employer might be:

• a private school
• an overseas school
• an organisation where the teacher has gained relevant work experience.

Teachers contact their previous employer to get this type of statement of service.

Using statement of service from previous employer for salary assessment

Teachers can use certified true copies of their statements of service to support their salary assessment application.

Each statement of service must include these details for the assessor to include them in the assessment:

• The statement of service must be on the school or organisation's letterhead.
• It must:
  - state the role of the employee
  - contain the specific start and end dates of the role, for example 
    09/02/2009 - 03/07/2009 (not February 2009 - July 2009)
  - detail the service, in other words full-time, part-time, or day relief
  - contain the total hours worked or hours a week for part-time roles
  - contain the total hours worked for day relief roles.
